Claims aluminium levels in Ardfinnan supply may have been 12 times above limit

A local councillor has said that higher than permitted levels of aluminium may have been evident in the Goatenbridge treatment plant for a month.

Cllr Máirín McGrath says she’s been made aware of this through a response from Uisce Eireann to a Freedom of Information request she submitted.

A Do Not Consume order was issued for people supplied by the Goatenbridge plant last Friday October 9th.

She told Tipp Today that Uisce Eireann’s response to her query indicates that 79 samples were taken between September 9th and October 11th.

Of those more than 60 exceeded the prescribed aluminium levels.

The Newcastle councillor has questioned why the public weren’t notified sooner.

Meanwhile Uisce Éireann have placed security at alternative water supply points across the county.

Following the ‘Do Not Consume’ order placed on households affected by issues on the Ardfinnan Supply, there was a surge in demand for bottled water.

Over the weekend, there was little stock left at alternative water supply locations, leaving many vulnerable people without safe drinking water.

Speaking to Tipp Today, Uisce Eireann’s Regional Water Operations Manager Fionnuala Callery, assured customers that these stations will continue to be replenished.
