The first sod will officially be turned on Nenagh’s new Wastewater Treatment Plant this morning.
The Housing Minister James Browne will be on hand with a shovel to ceremonially start the €49 million build.
The Minister may have some difficulty showing off his skills with a shovel in Nenagh today as Tipp FM news understands James Browne is carrying a leg injury.
Thankfully the sod turning ceremony is only a formality and a photo opp as work gets underway on a long-awaited project.
The lack of capacity at the current plant – which was originally built in the 1980’s – has meant that no new housing estates could be developed in the north Tipp town in recent years.
But when finished the upgraded site will be able to cope with connections for about 3,000 new homes.
Uisce Eireann says the new plant with be state of the art with cutting-edge technology that will secure full compliance with Irish and EU environmental legislation, and enhance the quality of the River Nenagh while safeguarding the local environment.
